Nature Conservation request MAC to reiterate to the their members that no alcohol is allowed in public areas (anywhere in Cape Town) and that boats are not allowed on the water before 10am in the week, and 9am on weekends.

Please be aware that Nature Conservation introduced a rule over the weekend that  basically requires anyone who is not a ‘sticker carrying’ member of MAC, to pay Council tariffs to enter the Reserve. This obviously caught everyone off guard and caused some understandable consternation.

As we digest this development, please let us consider the following -

This is not a local rule’ – it applies to all Reserves – the best example I can think of is……………. ‘If you go to Cape Point, you pay to get in the gate, even if you are only going to eat at the restaurant’.

Improved access control is good for everyone and it also generates cash that can be invested for all of our benefit.

Having said that, it does have an adverse effect on our various training inititives, visitors to regatta’s etc, occasional members guests. Hopefully, with some consultation, we can reach a mutually agreeable outcome.

In the meantime, please spread the word and ensure that everyone is aware of the reasons, upsides and the fact that we are doing our best to ensure a practical solution.

HELP LOWER OUR MAC WATER BILL

Message from the MAC Office:

"WATER IS PRECIOUS....AND COST'S US MONEY!"

Please do your bit and help us save. Rinsing your boat & aquatic equipment down is fine, washing your car and clothes is not!

RIP SCOTT COWING
We sadly lost Scott Cowing yesterday...............
A friendly man with a ready smile & a willingness to help. Scott was loved by all at MAC...his happy personality, his great attitude to life, his advice to others, his sense of humor and his gentle teasing ways made him very popular at MAC. His presence always brightened my day & I enjoyed our long chats about life, with never a bad word to say about anybody. A lovely man who will sorely missed. I send my hugs and love to his family at this difficult time.
RIP SCOTT COWING
A MEMORIAL SERVICE for Scott Cowing will be held this Friday, 1st February 2013 at the United Church, Cnr of Waterford and Raven Street, Bloubergrise at 15h00.

PLEASE LOCK MAIN GATE AFTER 5H30PM
URGENT REQUEST:
PLEASE CAN THE MAIN GATE BE LOCKED AFTER 5h30pm by everyone coming into or out of MAC. This is to protect all members assets that are being stored at MAC & thus it is to all our benefit. Unfortunately the gate is occasionally being left open at night by members, which is a huge security risk. All members should have a gate key and should carry it on themselves at all times. If you do not have a key please contact the MAC Office to arrange one. Ph. 021 557 7090

TABLE BAY NATURE RESERVE WINS BEST RESERVE AWARD
CONGRATULATIONS to Table Bay Nature Reserve for winning the "BEST RESERVE" in a team building competition held recently. All 30 Cape Town based conservation sites participated in this event. Rietvlei (MAC) falls under "Table Bay Nature Reserve"

The Table Bay Nature Reserve is a 880 hectare nature reserve situated in Milnerton, Cape Town, South Africa. It consists of several smaller constituent reserves including Rietvlei Wetland Reserve, Diep River Fynbos Corridor, Zoarvlei Wetlands, Milnerton Racecourse Nature Reserve, Milnerton Lagoon as well as surrounding protected areas. These adjacent reserves were amalgamated on the 27 June 2012, in order to improve the biodiversity management in the built-up area. It is managed by the City of Cape Town's Environmental Resource Management Department, and its offices have been opened at Rietvlei.[1]
The Table Bay Nature Reserve forms the southern-most buffer area of the Cape West Coast Biosphere Reserve, and links it to the edge of Cape Town's city centre. It also contains a large portion of the remaining critically endangered lowland habitats remaining in Cape Town.
The central feature in the Table Bay Nature Reserve is the Rietvlei wetland system. The Rietvlei wetlands and Milnerton Lagoon were proclaimed as a Nature Area on 3 August 1984 in proclamation number 1632 of Provincial Gazette No. 9345. The Nature Reserve is partly owned by the City of Cape Town and the World Wildlife Fund for Nature – South Africa, who owns two of the Erven. The City of Cape Town manages these two Erven on a 99 year lease for the purposes of nature conservation.[2]
